Questions about the Music CD conversion

Staff at one of the branches recently asked: We have a new music divider with no music in that genre to put behind it. What should we do?

Answer: Leave your music divider out on display. Chances are you do have something that fits that category but it may be checked out. Even if you don't have anything now, you soon will as new music is received and old music is reclassified.

All old ANSCR code categories can be moved immediately to the new divider. For instance, CDs with the code "Y" on the label can be moved to SOUNDS/EFFECTS; and CDs with the code "R" can be moved to HOLIDAY. The MA discs can be moved to the EASY LISTENING divider; the MR discs can be moved to the POP/ROCK category, and so on.

Cataloging will be calling back CDs for some time to come, so it will be a gradual process populating your new dividers. We think this project will really benefit staff and patrons alike, and to make the transition easier, please post your questions here and we promise to come up with answers!

More questions!
A branch wants to know how to incorporate their new dividers in with the old dividers. The answer: you don't. Your new dividers, which should have the genre name and the ANSCR code on them, will replace your old dividers. In addition, you have new dividers for the seven new genre categories. These seven dividers should have just the genre name on them - no ANSCR code.

Where to place the new dividers for categories you haven't had before? Remember that the new categories were pulled from MA and MR. Logically, those new category dividers can be placed after their original category. So for instance, R&B was pulled from MR (now POP/ROCK) and therefore can be shelved right after POP/ROCK.

I think the new subject labeling of music CDs is a terrific idea since patrons and staff can relate to types of music much more readily than to a random lettering system. I realize that transitioning to the new system will take time due to the existing cases still having the letter designations. However, the transition has already begun, so we are on our way.

Thanks for the encouragement, Anonymous! We call back CDs on a regular basis to fit them in the new genres and it's very satisfying to finish a stack and know that a genre divider is getting more populated. It is a long task but we feel it is well worth it!
